From ROME to ROME (or FLORENCE)

TRAVEL ITINERARY:
Day 01: ROME
Upon arrival in Rome, travel to the historical city center where you will check into your 4 star hotel. Afterwards, enjoy the rest of the day to start exploring the highlights of Rome’s city center, such as the Spanish Steps. This evening we recommend a romantic candlelit dinner in one of Rome’s best restaurants (ask your travel specialist for recommendations). Then head back to the hotel for your first overnight stay in Rome.
Day 02: ROME
After breakfast at the hotel, enjoy a morning free for sightseeing in Rome’s city center. You will find that a number of Rome’s iconic open-air monuments are within short walking distance of your hotel. With so much to see, feel free to go wherever your hearts take you and get ready to take plenty of photos. A few recommendations include the Spanish Steps, Piazza Navona with its remarkable fountains and of course the Trevi Fountain where you and your spouse can toss in your. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant, perhaps sampling some typical Roman street food, such as supplì, a rice ball that is fried and filled with mozzarella (trust us you won’t regret it!). After lunch you will take your first excursion which will focus on several of Rome’s religious monuments as well as the historic Catacombs. Stops include the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, the Basilica of St. John Lateran and the Catacombs where you will learn about the burial practices of early Christians in Ancient Rome during a walking tour of the underground tunnels. Once the excursion ends, you will return to the city center of Rome and you may wish to stop by the hotel to freshen up before dinner at a local trattoria. There are many iconic Roman dishes that you can try this evening; one of our favorites is cacio e pepe, a pasta dish that consists of aged Pecorino Romano cheese and lots of freshly ground black pepper. Top off your evening with a lovely stroll through Rome’s romantic streets paired with some of the best gelato in the city.
Day 03: ROME
Enjoy a leisurely breakfast at the hotel with your spouse and then spend another morning exploring the city center of Rome at your preferred pace. Our recommendation for this day is to join a walking tour of the Colosseum and
Roman Forum, during which an expert local guide will recount stories of battling gladiators and Roman Senators (optional tour, not included. Advanced reservations highly recommended). As an alternative, art lovers may prefer to visit the Borghese Gallery and admire the museum’s noteworthy collection of Renaissance art (optional activity and advance reservations are required). No matter what you choose to visit, be sure to take a break for another delicious Roman lunch. In the afternoon you will travel to the Vatican area where you will enjoy a walking tour of the Vatican Museums. Your expert local guide will lead you through many of the highlights including the Map Gallery, the Raphael Rooms and the Sistine Chapel. When you finish at the Vatican Museum complex, you will continue on to St. Peter’s Basilica, admiring its many beautiful chapels and the famous Pietà sculpture by Michelangelo. Once the tour ends, you will have time for further independent exploration of the Basilica; do not miss your chance to climb to the top of the dome and admire romantic views of Rome’s city center. Return to the hotel to unwind before another delicious dinner at a local restaurant.
Day 04: ROME, TARQUINIA, TUSCANIA, CAPRAROLA, CORTONA
After breakfast you will check out of your hotel and leave Rome. Travel north through the Lazio countryside and stop in the towns of Tarquinia and Tuscania, both of which have Etruscan origins. Stroll through the centers of these quaint towns before continuing on to Caprarola where you will visit the ornate Villa Farnese, which dates back to the Renaissance. Afterwards, journey into the breathtaking Tuscan countryside to reach your base city for the rest of the trip: picturesque Cortona. In the evening, enjoy dinner at a local restaurant where you will have the chance to try Tuscan specialties featuring handmade pasta and fresh local vegetables and meats.
Day 05: CORTONA
Spend your last day exploring the romantic streets of Cortona with your spouse. You will have this day at leisure for sightseeing in the city center, discovering the legacy of the Etruscan civilization and simply enjoying the atmosphere of this small town. During this time you may wish to visit Cortona’s historic Cathedral and other churches or one of the town’s museums such as the Etruscan Museum. If you are interested in taking a half day excursion on this day, please ask your travel specialist about options for food tours, wine tastings or other excursions that can be added to your travel package. Enjoy your last dinner at a local trattoria where you will taste more local dishes and celebrate your unforgettable honeymoon.
Day 06: CORTONA, FLORENCE (or ROME)
After your final breakfast in Cortona, you will check out of your hotel. Transportation to Rome’s airport, Rome’s city center or Florence’s city center is included as part of the package. Once you arrive in either Rome or Florence, the tour will be over.
