TRAVEL ITINERARY:
DAY 01 (Monday): ROME, ASSISI, SIENA, FLORENCE
Link up a the designated meeting point in Rome's city center in the early morning or get picked up at the hotel, depending on where your hotel is located. From here, you will head to Assisi, a medieval town that was home to Saint Francis, one of Italy’s two patron saints. After passing by the ancient defensive walls, you will have a chance to see the Basilica of Saint Francis, constructed around 1230. The Basilica is home to several frescoes from the Tuscan and Roman schools of painting, including masterpieces by painters Giotto and Cimabue, among others.
You will then continue towards Siena, a medieval jewel in Tuscany famous for the Palio horse-race held twice a year in Piazza del Campo, the main city square. From the historic palaces to the ornate Cathedral, the local architecture of Siena is truly awe-inspiring.
Following your time in Siena, you will proceed to Florence where you will check in to your hotel and enjoy a delightful dinner before turning in for the night.
DAY 02 (Tuesday): FLORENCE, PISA (Optional, not included)
Begin the day with a buffet breakfast served at the hotel. After breakfast, depart for a guided exploration of Florence, one of the most beautiful cities in the world and the Cradle of the Renaissance. Along the way, you will visit Piazza del Duomo, located in the city’s historic center. This fabulous piazza features stunning architecture and has influenced many artists over the past centuries. Here, you will see the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, one of the largest churches in Europe. Be sure to admire the fantastic Tuscan marble adorning the façade. At Giotto’s Bell Tower, you will have a chance to see a fantastic example of Gothic architecture. Take note of the beautiful marble reliefs and the windows of this 277 foot tall tower. Next, you will stop by the Baptistery of St. John, a stunning Romanesque building that is perhaps the oldest in Florence. Finally, you will visit the Basilica of Santa Croce, a 13th century Franciscan Church which houses the tombs of many influential people, including Galileo and Michelangelo!
The rest of the day is yours to explore at your leisure. Consider opting for a half day excursion to Pisa (optional activity, not included), or spend your time shopping among Florence’s high end stores, small boutiques and local artisans shops.
In the evening, you will return to your hotel for dinner and a rejuvenating rest.
Day 03 (Wednesday): FLORENCE, PADUA, VENICE
Start your day with a rich buffet breakfast before leaving for Venice by motor coach. Before your arrival in the City of Bridges, you will visit Padua, home of the famous Cathedral of St. Anthony. There are many beautiful frescoes to admire inside the Cathedral, while outside you will find the famous depiction of Erasmo of Narni standing guard on his horse, known as the “Gattamelata” statue,
After your visit to Padua, you will continue on to Venice. Once there, you will explore the unique city with the help of a professional guide. During your tour you will see St. Mark’s Square and visit the Basilica of St. Mark, also known as the Church of Gold due to its opulent and graceful design. You will discover the Doge’s Palace (exterior only), the most important civic building of the city, which was once the home of the supreme authority in the city and features the old Prisons and the famous Bridge of Sighs, named as such because it provided the last view of the city that prisoners would see while being transported from the interrogation rooms to their prison cells.
In the evening, sit down for a hearty dinner and rest up for the night at a local Venetian hotel.
Day 04 (Thursday): VENICE
Begin the day with a buffet breakfast before heading out for a morning boat tour of Venice’s lagoon. During the trip, you will cross the lagoon and enjoy a beautiful view of the islands before pulling into Murano Island, which is famous for its elegant glass, and you will have a chance to watch a demonstration of authentic glass blowing. Afterwards, you will have a brief amount of time to shop before heading back to Venice.
In the afternoon, you will leave for Rome by train or bus (your means of transportation will be confirmed a couple days before the tour’s conclusion by the tour leader).
Arrival in Rome's city center will mark the end of the tour.
