Lecce
Located in the southern part of Italy — in the heel of this boot-shaped country — the city of Lecce has been characterized as the “Florence of the South” due to its rich, distinctive architecture and historic city center. It is a beautiful city made for exploring and experiencing by foot. It is known for its clear turquoise waters, sandy beaches, good food, and incredible wines. The Messapii (a bygone Greek tribe) originally settled the city over two thousand years ago, and a dialect of the ancient Greek language is still spoken there today. Lecce is distinguished by its “Barocco Leccese” monuments that dot the city and give a brief glimpse into its early Greek and Illyrian roots.
