Travel Guide & Information of Lake Como Lombardy Italy Photo Gallery Mantua Pavia Milan Como Bergamo Lake Como Bormio

This description page of Lake Como, in the Italian region of Lombardy, will guide you in planning your trip to Italy and help you find useful travel information about this Italian city.

Como has attracted visitors since at least Roman times when the lake was called Lario. Dotted with villas, gardens, much of it remains the tranquil romantic setting that has inspired countless artists, good and bad, but also partially has become the weekend playground for nearby Milan, which is only 25 km away from the southern end of the lake.

WLOMLAGOCOMO93.jpgThe lake is shaped like wishbone, with two thin legs extending about 50 km from end to end. It is less than 4.5 km at its widest point, but it is one of the deepest lakes in Europe, reaching a depth of over 1,300 feet at its deepest point. The eastern leg is often called Lago di Lecco. The water is generally cleaner the further it is from the lake’s largest city, Como. Interesting, the wind blows from the south from noon to sunset, and from the north during the night.

Along the shores of Lake Como are the charming towns of Tremezzo, Bellagio, Menaggio, Cernobbio, and Varenna. With the exception of Varenna, the eastern shore of Lake Como including Lecco, accommodations are much rarer and the towns are more rustic. In addition to enjoying the incredible natural beauty along the lake and relaxation, there is also golf, sailing, boating, rowing, canoeing, water skiing, hiking and horse-riding.
