Travel through the stunning hill country to reach picturesque Assisi, a historic town resting on Mount Subasio. Enjoy a walking tour of the city center led by an expert local guide who will lead you through ancient streets and breathtaking palaces before arriving at the famed Basilica of St. Francis. Divided into an upper section and a lower section, there is plenty to admire including the series of masterful frescoes by Giotto which outline the life of St. Francis. Before returning to Rome, you will stop in another city in Umbria, either Perugia or Orvieto, to learn more about the history and local culture of this region. Detailed itinerary:
Walk in the steps of St. Francis during this day long sightseeing excursion through the beautiful Umbrian hill country. From Rome we'll take the Autostrada Del Sole to reach Assisi crossing vineyards, olive groves and charming medieval small towns on the hilltops. Explore Assisi with your guide: traversing the narrow streets, passing through the Piazza del Comune, Palazzo dei Priori, Palazzo del Popolo and the Temple of Minerva, to the Basilica of St. Francis, home to masterpieces by Giotto and Cimabue, and the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli with the Porziuncola Chapel, where the Franciscan Order was founded. You'll enjoy lunch and some free time before we move to Perugia or Orvieto, two beautiful medieval towns that are characteristic of the Umbria region. The tour ends back in Rome around 7:00 pm. Drop off at your hotel or the nearest point.
