Meet your group in central Rome and depart by deluxe motor coach for Assisi, the hilltop town of St. Francis. Explore the Basilica of St. Francis, adorned with frescoes by Giotto and Cimabue, and admire the medieval castles that dominate the landscape. Continue to Siena, renowned for its fine art, museums, and the legendary Palio horse race, and see the impressive Cathedral that was once intended to be the largest in the world. Each neighborhood here is represented by its own animal or mascot, and their rivalries come alive during the Palio. In the evening, travel on to Florence, where you’ll enjoy dinner and a peaceful night at your hotel.
After breakfast, travel by coach to Padua, a historic university city and the setting of Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew.” Visit the Basilica of St. Anthony, guarded by Donatello’s majestic equestrian statue “Gattamelata.” Continue to Venice and embark on a panoramic walking tour of this unique canal city. In St. Mark’s Square, admire the domes of St. Mark’s Basilica, one of the finest examples of Italo‑Byzantine architecture, and see the Gothic Doge’s Palace from the outside. You’ll also view the famous Bridge of Sighs, named for the last glimpse of Venice that prisoners had before entering their cells. Enjoy dinner and an overnight stay on Venice Island.
After breakfast, enjoy a morning boat tour across the Venetian Lagoon to Murano, a cluster of islands famed for centuries of glass‑making tradition. Watch a glass‑blowing demonstration and browse local shops for unique pieces. In the afternoon, transfer to the rail station or Tronchetto, where you’ll board your transportation back to Rome (coach or train, as advised by your tour escort). Relax on the journey and, upon arrival in Rome, transfer to your hotel. Dinner is not included this evening.
After breakfast, depart Rome with your multilingual tour leader and head south to Naples, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. On a guided walking tour, see Piazza del Plebiscito, the Royal Palace, Galleria Umberto I, and the historic Teatro di San Carlo. Continue along the Tyrrhenian coast toward Pompeii, with views of Mount Vesuvius, and stop briefly at a coral and cameo factory, a local craft dating back millennia. Enjoy lunch in a typical restaurant, then visit the excavations of Pompeii, where ash and stone from the 79 AD eruption preserved an entire Roman city in remarkable detail. Afterward, travel on to the Sorrentine Peninsula, known for its dramatic cliffs and citrus groves, for dinner and an overnight stay in Sorrento.
After breakfast, depart for the legendary island of Capri, a resort destination since Roman times. Arrive at Marina Grande and, weather permitting, visit the magical Blue Grotto, where sunlight filtering through the water bathes the cave in an ethereal blue light. For your final day, enjoy a buffet breakfast at your Hotel, take the rest of the morning to explore the popular and attractive town of Sorrento on your own. Consider leisurely shopping along Via San Cesareo, Sorrento’s main shopping street, or visit the Museum Correale, which is surrounded by a grove of lush citrus trees. You may also choose to visit the nearby coastal towns of Ravello, Positano or Amalfi.
Be prepared to meet at the hotel at 3:30 p.m. You will meet your tour leader and return to Rome via motor coach. Depending on traffic, your arrival in Rome will be around 9:00 p.m.
