Arrive at your hotel in Bettona, a charming hilltop village overlooking the Umbrian countryside. After check-in, enjoy a welcome drink and some time at leisure to begin exploring this ancient town, known for its Etruscan roots, medieval walls, and panoramic views. In the evening, savor a welcome dinner featuring traditional Umbrian dishes, then relax with an overnight stay at your cozy hotel.
After breakfast, begin your discovery of Umbria with a guided tour of Assisi, one of Italy’s most important spiritual destinations. Walk through the historic streets and visit the Basilica of Saint Francis, renowned for its stunning Gothic and Romanesque architecture and extraordinary frescoes by Giotto and other masters. Enjoy lunch on your own at a local trattoria. In the afternoon, we recommend heading to Perugia, the lively regional capital. Stroll along Corso Vannucci, admire elegant medieval palaces, the beautiful Fontana Maggiore, and explore the fascinating Rocca Paolina, a partially underground Renaissance fortress. Take a break in one of the city’s many cafés or bakeries to sample a pastry or taste the famous Perugina chocolate. Return to your hotel in Bettona for the night.
After breakfast, depart for Montefalco, a small, charming village often called the “Balcony of Umbria” for its sweeping views over vineyards and olive groves. Visit a local olive oil mill to learn about the production of high-quality Umbrian extra virgin olive oil, then enjoy a light lunch of regional specialties paired with the mill’s oils. In the afternoon, we suggest continuing to Spoleto, a beautiful city of art known for its Roman, medieval, and Renaissance monuments and the renowned Festival of Two Worlds. On the way, pause to admire the striking Ponte delle Torri, a medieval bridge spanning a deep gorge and surrounded by lush greenery. Nearby, browse important cashmere outlets where you’ll have time to shop for fine Italian knitwear. Return to your hotel in Bettona for a farewell dinner featuring local Umbrian cuisine, followed by an overnight stay.
After breakfast, check out from your hotel. If you have the morning free, we recommend a stop in Torgiano to visit its Wine Museum and learn more about the region’s viticultural traditions, or a visit to Deruta, one of Italy’s most important centers for maiolica ceramics. In Deruta, explore the Ceramic Museum and wander through the town’s historic streets, where small artisan workshops still produce hand-painted pottery using centuries-old techniques. Your Umbrian escape concludes here, with lasting memories of Assisi, Perugia, Montefalco, Spoleto, and the authentic flavors and crafts of central Italy.
