A strikingly beautiful dual region, Trentino-Alto Adige, with borders on Austria and Switzerland, is split into two distinct provinces. Trentino, around the city of Trento (or Trent) to the south, is historically Italian in language and culture. Alto Adige, around the city of Bolzano (or Bozen) to the north, is known as South Tyrol (Südtirol in German) to the prominent German-speaking population. The South Tyrol, historically part of Austria, is officially bilingual where you’ll find street signs in two languages—take your choice!

The Adige River, Italy’s second largest, descends from an alpine lake high in the Dolomites, near the Austrian border, and travels south through the center of Trentino-Alto Adige, creating Valdadige (the Adige Valley).

The natives of Alto Adige and Trentino share an unspoiled nature complemented by a wealth of recreational sports. The Adige valley contains lakes, rivers and streams, woodland and vineyards. Southeast of the region rises the limestone peaks of the majestic Dolomites and further north the area becomes more mountainous and enclosed by the splendid heights of the Alps, popular ski resorts, snow-capped peaks, and immaculate medieval towns.

Not to miss are the vast, imposing castles in Trentino Alto Adige, most of them are remarkably well preserved, and open to visitors.
