Aosta Valley Things to Do

leisure and sport in valle d'aosta

Val d'Aosta is a real paradise for winter sports. Valle d'Aosta's 28 ski resorts, among these the well-known Ayas, Breuil Cervinia, Courmayeur, and La Thuile, offer skiers modern and quick facilities, and miles of wonderful slopes. You can enjoy skiing, snowboarding, country skiing, ski mountaineering and heliskiing with professional alpine guides as well as resting in warm alpine refuges. Not to be forgotten are the wonderful walks with snow shoes, the dog-sleigh rides, glacier climbing and also, why not, a balloon flight.

But also during the summer the Valle d'Aosta is ideal for sport activities: trekking, hiking, canoeing, rafting, horse riding, paragliding, mountain biking, fishing, golf, and of course, thanks to the high glacier, summer skiing.

This wonderful region is the perfect for immersing oneself in nature, thanks to the Gran Paradiso National Park, which includes the valleys of Cogne, Rhemes and Valsavarenche and the massif of the same name. Along its 450 km of tracks, which lead to 11 Alpine mountain refuges, you can find the noblest species of alpine flora and fauna: edelweiss, alpine rhododendrons, marmots, chamois, golden eagles, and ibex.

From the original necessity of producing objects for daily use, Aostans have developed a real talent for woodworks and specialize in making bowls, plates, furniture, barrels and clogs. Other items include wickerwork, stonework, lace and ironwork.

tradition and festivals in valle d'aosta

The Val d'Aosta's inhabitants know how to keep its ancient traditions alive. Various festivals, fairs and pilgrimages have had great success over the past decades. In addition to a long list of traditional festivities, such as the Carnevale di Verrés, the most important event of the whole region, and the ancient Bataille de Reines, where the reines (queens) are the cows, organized in different places from the spring to the fall; there are many new manifestations, festivals, sporting and cultural exhibitions.
