TRAVEL ITINERARY:
DAY 01 (Monday): ROME, ASSISI, SIENA, FLORENCE
Link up a the designated meeting point in Rome city center around 7:30 a.m. or get picked up at the hotel between 6:45 and 7:15 in the morning, depending on where your hotel is located. From here, you will head to Assisi, a medieval town that was home to Saint Francis, one of Italy’s two patron saints. Once past its ancient defensive walls, you will have a chance to see the Basilica of Saint Francis, built around 1230. The basilica is home to several frescos from the Tuscan and Roman schools of painting. These include masterpieces by Renaissance painters Giotto and Cimabue, among others.
You will then continue towards Siena, another medieval jewel in Tuscany. Siena is famous for the Palio horserace, and it features one of the most beautiful Piazza’s in Italy, the Piazza del Campo. The local architecture is awe-inspiring.
Following your time in Siena, you will proceed to Florence. Once you arrive, check in to your hotel and enjoy a delightful dinner before turning in for the night.
DAY 02 (Tuesday): FLORENCE, PISA (Optional, not included)
Begin the day with a buffet breakfast served at the hotel. After breakfast, depart for a guided exploration of Florence, one of the most beautiful cities in the world and the cradle of the Italian Renaissance. Along the way, you will visit the Piazza del Duomo, located in the city’s historic center. This fabulous piazza features stunning architecture and has influenced many artists over the past centuries. You will also see the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, one of the largest churches in Europe. Be sure to admire the fantastic Tuscan marble adorning the façade. At Giotto’s Bell Tower, you will have a chance to see a fantastic example of Gothic architecture. Take note of the beautiful marble reliefs ringing the windows of this 277’ tall tower. You will also stop by the Baptistery of St. John, a stunning Romanesque building that is perhaps the oldest in Florence. Finally, you will visit the Basilica of Santa Croce, a 13th century Franciscan Church which houses the tombs of many influential people, including Galileo and Michelangelo!
The rest of the day is yours to explore at your leisure. Consider opting for the Pisa half day tour (optional activity, not included), or spend your time shopping among Florence’s high end stores, small boutiques and local artisans shops.
In the evening, you will return to your hotel for dinner and a rejuvenating rest.
Day 03 (Wednesday): FLORENCE, PADUA, VENICE
Start your day with a rich buffet breakfast before leaving for Venice by coach. Before your arrival in the City of Bridges, you will visit Padua, home of the famous Cathedral of St. Anthony. There are many famous works by Donatello at the cathedral. Outside, the famous depiction of Erasmo of Narni stands guard on his horse, affectionately known as “Gattamelata.”
After your visit to Padua, you will continue on to Venice. Once here, you will explore the unique city with the help of a professional guide. During your tour you will see St. Mark’s square, the site of many famous sculptures, like the Lion of Venice. You will also visit the Basilica of St. Mark, also known as the Church of Gold due to its opulent and graceful design. You will discover the Doge’s Palace (from exterior), the most important civic building of the city, which was once the home of the supreme authority in city and which includes also the old Prisons and famous Bridge of Sighs.
The Bridge of Sighs are so named because they provided the last view that prisoners would see while being transported from the interrogation rooms to their prison cells. The bridge features windows and beautiful architecture. This is a favorite spot for many who visit.
In the evening, sit down for a hearty dinner and rest up for the night at a local Venetian hotel.
Day 04 (Thursday): VENICE
Begin the day with a buffet breakfast before heading out for a morning boat tour of Venice’s lagoon. During the trip, you will cross the lagoon and enjoy a beautiful view of the islands before pulling into Murano. Murano is famous for its elegant glass, and you will have a chance to see a demonstration of authentic glass blowing. Once you witness this demonstration first-hand, you will understand why so many pieces of Murano glass can be seen in museums world-wide. You will have a brief amount of time to shop before heading back to the city.
In the afternoon, you will leave to Rome by train or bus. Your means of transportation will be confirmed a couple days before the tour’s conclusion by the tour leader.
