Discover some of the most beautiful parts of Rome and Southern Italy during this amazing eight day travel package. While in Rome you will have the chance to wander the historical city center, explore iconic landmarks, sight-see along the Appian Way, tour the Vatican Museums and much more. In Pompeii, experience the famous excavation site before making your way to nearby Mount Vesuvius National Park for stunning views of the Bay of Naples. Then head through the Sorrento Countryside to visit pasta making factories and gorgeous vineyards before witnessing first-hand the mesmerizing Sassi di Matera, featuring fascinating abodes carved into the sides of rocky cliffs. Last, but certainly not least, you will spend some time exploring the highlights of the Apulia region, including the enchanting town of Alberobello with its famous "trulli" stone huts. From Rome to Apulia, this fascinating tour will help you fall in love with a new side of Italy.
Day 01: ROME
Arrival in Rome and transfer to your hotel on your own. Use your time at leisure to get acquainted with this enchanting city until the evening, when you will meet with your tour assistant who will provide information regarding your travel itinerary. Overnight stay at your hotel in Rome.
Day 02: ROME
Breakfast at the hotel. In the morning, enjoy your time at leisure to explore Rome at your own pace. Discover the beautiful fountains and squares of Rome, enjoy a cappuccino and an Italian pastry in one of the many outdoor cafés, or attend the Papal Audience in Saint Peter's Square (on Wednesday mornings only). In the afternoon, you will join a sightseeing tour along the Appian Way, viewing ancient ruins and churches such as the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, the Basilica of St. John Lateran, the Scala Santa (Holy stairs) and the Christian Catacombs. Dinner at a typical trattoria, among the locals and far from the tourist traps. Overnight at your hotel in Rome.
Day 03: ROME
After breakfast, you'll enjoy a morning at leisure. You may wish to take this opportunity to visit the Colosseum and the Roman Forum (optional, not included), or the Villa Borghese Gallery (optional, not included and entrance reservations required), with numerous important pieces of art. In the afternoon, you will visit the Vatican Museums, a repository for centuries of splendid art and history. You'll marvel at this intersection of faith and beauty, which includes a visit of the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter's Basilica. Return to your hotel. Dinner on your own and overnight in Rome.
Day 04: ROME, POMPEII, VESUVIUS, SORRENTO
Breakfast at the hotel before heading to Pompeii via private vehicle. Upon arrival, you will meet your tour guide who will escort you through the excavation site where Mount Vesuvius covered the town in hot volcanic ash. These layers of ash preserved citizens of the town and their homes for many centuries, leaving behind a city frozen in time until excavation in the 1800s. Enjoy time at leisure for lunch in these historic surroundings before the tour moves to Mount Vesuvius National Park. The bus will take you nearly 3,300 feet up the face of the volcano where you'll have the chance to hike another 650 feet to the top of this still active volcano. The 30 minute hike pays off with spectacular views of the Bay of Naples. Afterwards, the tour continues to Sorrento where you will check into your hotel for the night.
Day 05: SORRENTO COUNTRYSIDE
Enjoy a buffet breakfast to prepare for a full day of authentic Italian food experiences. First you will visit a local pasta making factory, where you will learn traditional recipes for making fresh homemade pastas and sauces. Afterwards, you will enjoy lunch at a charming farmhouse on Mount Vesuvius, where you will tour orchards and vineyards, rich and lush from the volcanic soil. Later you will savor a glass of wine on the patio of this typical farmhouse before returning to the hotel in Sorrento for the night.
Day 06: SORRENTO, AMALFI, MATERA, ALBEROBELLO
Breakfast at the hotel before leaving Sorrento and driving along the breathtaking Amalfi Coast. You will stop in the ancient Maritime Republic of Amalfi, where you will have time to explore independently: enjoy a stroll in this colorful sea side town, meet the friendly locals and visit the characteristic Duomo. Lunch (not included) at leisure prior to departure. The group will continue towards Matera and stop to visit the UNESCO recognized Sassi, prehistoric houses carved into the tuff rock. The unique landscape of Matera with its ancient cave dwellings is guaranteed to take your breath away. After an unforgettable visit of Matera, the day ends in Alberobello in the Apulia Region, where you will enjoy a dinner of traditional Apulian foods, including Altamura bread, fresh pasta, local cheese and wines. Overnight at the hotel.
Day 07: ALBEROBELLO, OSTUNI
After a typical Italian breakfast, you will embark on a tour of Alberobello, famous for its characteristic Trulli; these unique cone shaped homes are an emblem of this area. You'll want to take plenty of photos in this charming town, as well as in Ostuni, your next stop. Known as the "White City", the buildings of Ostuni's city center are whitewashed, creating a unique sight as you walk the winding streets, from whichyou can also appreciate the fields of olives trees and the Mediterranean Sea. Return to Alberobello for dinner and overnight at your hotel.
Day 08: ALBEROBELLO
Enjoy breakfast at the hotel and then end of our services.
