The second part of the trip takes place in sunny southern Italy where you will visit the picturesque city of Sorrento as well as the charming coastal towns of the Amalfi Coast. Experience the perfect balance of sightseeing and time at leisure during this 11-day family vacation to Rome and the Amalfi Coast.
TOUR HIGHLIGHTS: Rome, Naples, Pompeii, Amalfi Coast, Positano, Amalfi, Ravello Sorrento and Capri
Day 01: OUT-BOUND FLIGHT
Board your flight and begin your once-in-a-lifetime vacation!
Day 02: ROME
Once you touch down in Rome, collect your checked luggage and meet with your private driver. Travel together to your hotel in Rome’s historical city center where you will check-in. Afterwards, the rest of the day will be at leisure for you to explore independently. Begin to familiarize yourself with Rome’s historical city center and feel free to visit open-air monuments that may be of interest to your family. A few suggestions include Largo di Torre Argentina, an archeological site with the remains of temples that today is home to a colony of cats. If you prefer to spend time at a museum, consider visiting the Capitoline Museums followed by a stop at the nearby Vittoriano Monument which has a rooftop panoramic terrace that offers one of the best views of Rome. Another area to visit on this day could be the Gardens of Villa Borghese, where you can unwind in the lush vegetation and admire the villas. At the end of the day, walk to a local restaurant where you can enjoy your first taste of Roman cuisine, such as saltimbocca alla romana (veal wrapped with sage and prosciutto). Afterwards, return to your hotel for the night.
Day 03: ROME
After you finish breakfast at the hotel, depart for the Colosseum where you will start your walking tour that will offer something very special for younger travelers. After meeting with the guide, he or she will provide a unique treasure map to each child in your group. As you explore the different levels of the Colosseum, the guide will share historical context in a fun and entertaining way in order to engage everyone in your family. Additionally, during the tour you will come across various clues that will lead you and your family closer and closer to the final treasure. At the end of the tour, feel free to continue exploring on your own. Then stop by a local restaurant to enjoy a nice lunch with your family.
Take the afternoon to continue exploring independently and feel free to visit any monuments that may be of interest to your family. Suggestions include historic outdoor monuments such as the Circus Maximus and the Pyramid of Cestius. Additionally, do not miss your chance to visit the famous Trevi Fountain so that everyone in the family can toss in a coin. If you would like to visit a museum, consider stopping by the National Etruscan Museum or the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art. Conclude your day of sightseeing with dinner at a trattoria within walking distance of your hotel where you can try a local pasta dish such as cacio e pepe (pasta with Pecorino cheese and freshly ground black pepper) before returning to your hotel for an overnight stay.
Day 04: ROME
When you finish breakfast, head to a meeting point in the city center where your family will participate in a hands-on cooking class. Prior to cooking, enjoy a walking tour of Rome’s iconic open-air monuments including Piazza Navona and the Spanish Steps. The tour concludes in Campo de’ Fiori in order to visit the daily outdoor market held in the square. Here, farmers and other producers from across the region sell fresh produce and other culinary products. Following the guidance of a local chef, during your visit of the market you will pick out fresh local ingredients that will be incorporated into your dishes during the cooking class. Once you finish at the market, continue to the kitchen where you will don your aprons and learn about the fundamentals of Italian cuisine. The chef will walk you through multiple traditional recipes that you will taste for lunch together with delicious local wines.
In the afternoon, feel free to continue exploring Rome on your own as a family. There are countless options just waiting to be discovered including authentic neighborhoods such as Trastevere or Testaccio. If you wish to do some shopping, both Via del Corso and Via Condotti are shopping hubs with many boutiques. Alternatively, one of Rome’s many churches, such as San Giovanni in Laterano or Santa Maria Maggiore may be of interest to you. At the end of the day, enjoy dinner at a family-owned restaurant and take the opportunity to taste another local dish, such as carbonara (pasta with cured pork, eggs, cheese and black pepper). Afterwards, return to your hotel for an overnight stay.
Day 05: ROME
After breakfast at the hotel, travel to the Vatican Area where you will meet with your guide and embark on a walking tour of the Vatican Museums. Considered to be one of the largest museum complexes in the world, the Vatican Museums are home to a vast collection of art that was amassed by the Papacy over many centuries. As part of the tour, you will have the opportunity to admire many prized masterpieces including the frescoes of the Raphael Rooms and the Gallery of the Tapestries. Time will also be dedicated to the Sistine Chapel where you can admire Michelangelo’s frescoes. Next, visit St. Peter’s Basilica to admire its magnificent chapels and works of art. The tour concludes directly in the Basilica, which is the largest church in the world, and you will be able to continue exploring independently. Depending on your interests, you may wish to climb to the top of the dome, from which you can admire a stunning view of Rome from above. Then, feel free to spend some time in St. Peter’s Square with its impressive colonnade before taking a break for lunch at a local trattoria or osteria.
The rest of the afternoon will be at leisure for you to continue exploring the Vatican Area. Depending on your personal preferences, several landmarks may be of interest to your family. One recommendation is the former Papal fortress known as Castel Sant’Angelo. Originally built as mausoleum for the Emperor Hadrian, the rich history of this monument spans centuries and its unique architecture is a sight to be seen. Whether you choose to visit the museum inside of the castle or simply admire the exterior structure, Castel Sant’Angelo is a stop that everyone in the family will enjoy. Next, take the opportunity to witness the breathtaking Sant’Angelo Bridge with its marble angel sculptures before crossing over the Tiber River and returning to the main historical center of Rome. Here you may wish to do some additional sightseeing or partake in souvenir shopping, if you have not already done so. In the evening, stop by a local trattoria to enjoy your final dinner in Rome with your family before returning to the hotel for an overnight stay.
Day 06: POMPEII, SORRENTO
In the morning, check out of your hotel and then travel south to begin the next part of your vacation. Prior to arrival in Sorrento, stop in the historic city of Pompeii where you will have the chance to visit the famous archeological ruins. Meet with your guide at the entrance to the ruins and begin your tour of this fascinating Ancient Roman city. Destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D., today Pompeii is one of the best surviving examples of an Ancient Roman city thanks to the layer of volcanic ash that preserved its ruins for centuries. During the tour, you will have the chance to step back in time and admire ruins that are unlike any other place on earth. Afterwards, enjoy time at leisure for lunch with your family and then continue your journey to Sorrento, located along the picturesque Bay of Naples. Once you have completed the check in process at the new hotel, take some time to explore Sorrento independently before sharing a nice dinner with your family at a restaurant on the seafront. Afterwards, enjoy a nice stroll under the moonlight and then return to your hotel where you can settle in for the night.
Day 07: AMALFI COAST
After a refreshing breakfast at the hotel, meet with the rest of your group and embark on a memorable excursion to the most scenic towns on the Amalfi Coast. Upon arrival in each town, you will have time at leisure to explore independently with your family. The first stop will be Positano, a unique village positioned on a cliff that is renowned for its remarkable views. Consider stopping by the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, famous for its multi-colored majolica dome, in order to engage in some cultural sightseeing. As an alternative, you may prefer to simply wander Positano’s winding streets or spend some time by the water. Afterwards, continue on to Amalfi, the principal city on the Amalfi Coast, which served as a powerful Maritime Republic for several centuries. Highlights here include the artistically rich Duomo and the wondrous Cloister of Paradise. Last, but certainly not least, the group will stop in the hilltop town of Ravello, which is emblematic of the Amalfi Coast’s charming, seaside towns. While in Ravello, you may wish to visit the Villa Rufolo, which is renowned for its terraced gardens and stunning views of the surrounding area. Once you finish your visit of Ravello, return to Sorrento where you will enjoy a dinner featuring local delicacies followed by an overnight stay at your hotel.
Day 08: CAPRI
Once you finish breakfast at the hotel, prepare to embark on a very special adventure that everyone in the family is sure to enjoy! After meeting with your boat captain at the dock in Sorrento, board your motorboat and travel to the mesmerizing Island of Capri, considered to be among the most beautiful islands in the world. As you approach the island, take a moment to marvel at the famous Faraglioni, large rock formations located just off of Capri’s coast that have become a symbol of the island. After docking, your time in Capri will be at leisure to explore the highlights of Capri, which is actually divided into two parts: an upper part called Anacapri and a lower part called Capri. One recommended activity is to purchase tickets to travel to the Blue Grotto via rowboat. This sea cave is famous due to the remarkable blue light that emerges when the rays of the sun make contact with the pristine water. Afterwards, take some time to discover other highlights of the island, such as the panoramic chairlift or the Gardens of Augustus. Additionally, do not miss your chance to sample some of the local cuisine during lunch at one of Capri’s historic restaurants. Then, consider visiting the many artisan workshops where you can learn about local handcrafted goods such as sandals and Limoncello. At the end of the excursion, meet back with your boat captain at the dock in order to travel back to Sorrento. Take some time to freshen up at the hotel, then go out for dinner at a family-owned restaurant before settling in for the night at your hotel.
Day 09: SORRENTO
After breakfast, spend a day at leisure with your family exploring the highlights of Sorrento. Cultural sites worth a visit include Villa Comunale and the Correale Museum. Active families may wish to hit the trails and enjoy a few hours of hiking through the beautiful surroundings. For a leisurely day, visit the local shops to make souvenir purchases and prepare postcards for friends and family. At the end of the day, commemorate your Amalfi Coast vacation with dinner at one of the best restaurants in Sorrento. Afterwards, take an evening stroll through the city center then return to your hotel.
Day 10: SORRENTO, ROME
In the morning, complete the check-out process at the hotel and then take the high-speed train to Rome. If you wish to spend most of the day in Sorrento, you will have the option to take a later train to Rome. Upon arrival, check into the hotel and the rest of the day will be at leisure. Enjoy dinner at a local restaurant and then return to your hotel for the night.
