Other must-sees in Assisi include the Basilica of Santa Chiara, the Rocca Maggiore, the Cathedral of San Ruffino and of course the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli, which is unique due to the fact that it houses the Porziuncola, a tiny church in which the Franciscan movement was founded. At the end of the tour, unwind during lunch at a family-owned restaurant and take a moment to process all of the remarkable art and history you absorbed.
Your afternoon in Assisi will be at leisure to continue sightseeing on your own or perhaps visit the town’s shops where unique souvenirs can be purchased. During this time, you will learn about the historic production process that makes Umbrian wine unique. Upon arrival in the Eternal City, check into your final hotel and begin your exploration of the city center. We recommend visiting the Vittoriano Monument and taking the elevator up to the panoramic terrace where you can admire remarkable views of Rome from above. In the evening, enjoy a delicious dinner at one of Rome’s many family-owned restaurants. There are countless specialties you could try and one recommendation is cacio e pepe, which is pasta with Pecorino cheese and freshly ground black pepper. Afterwards, take a stroll through the city center to admire the skyline under the moonlight before returning to your hotel for an overnight stay.
DAY 9: ROME
After breakfast, head to the Colosseum to embark on a walking tour of the main highlights of Ancient Rome. The first stop will be the Colosseum and thanks to your skip-the-line entrance reservations you will maximize your sightseeing time. Follow your guide as you explore the different levels of the Colosseum and learn about its historical significance. Your guide will recount fascinating tales of the brave gladiators that once fought here. Afterwards, continue on to the Roman Forum, which was the political center of Ancient Rome. Here you will observe the ruins of many structures that were pivotal during the Roman Republic and Roman Empire. When the tour concludes, head to the summit of the Palatine Hill to admire remarkable views of Rome from above. The afternoon will be open for you to continue exploring Rome independently. Depending on your preferences, you may wish to visit a museum, such as the Capitoline Museums or the National Etruscan Museum. Alternatively, you could visit the many open-air monuments of Rome such as the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, Piazza Navona and Largo di Torre Argentina. No matter what you choose to see, in the evening we recommend spending time in a characteristic neighborhood of Rome, such as Trastevere, to enjoy a traditional dinner at a restaurant favored by the locals. Afterwards, enjoy a nice stroll through the area and grab a few scoops of gelato before spending the night at your hotel.
DAY 10: VATICAN
Your final full day in Rome will be dedicated to the magnificent Vatican. Once you finish breakfast, make your way to the Vatican Museums, one of the largest museum complexes in the world. As you stroll through these hallowed halls with your guide, you will admire many fascinating works of art including the frescoes of the Raphael Rooms and the stunning Sistine Chapel. Afterwards, continue on to St. Peter’s Basilica and spend some time inside the largest church in the world. The guide will provide historical context and explain the significance of some of the major highlights, such as the Pietà sculpture by Michelangelo. The tour will conclude inside of the Basilica, which means that you will be able to continue exploring this fascinating church independently. We recommend climbing to the top of the dome to admire the scenery and visiting the underground crypt area where several Popes are buried. When you exit the Basilica, take a moment to admire the impressive colonnade in St. Peter’s Square before stopping by a local trattoria or osteria for lunch.
Enjoy your final afternoon in Rome with some additional sightseeing. Before leaving the Vatican Area, we recommend visiting Castel Sant’Angelo, an ancient structure that served as a Papal fortress for many centuries. Afterwards, cross over the Sant’Angelo Bridge (be sure to admire the marble angel sculptures along the way) in order to return to the historical city center of Rome.
