The tour gets started with your departure from Otranto. You will journey south to Italy’s most beautiful city – Gallipoli. Located on the Ionian Sea, the city is actually in two parts, linked together by a bridge. There are actually two bridges. The modern Borgo Bridge features 20th century construction, while the older bridge makes use of a limestone island as a central support.
Entering the city, you’ll first see the Greek Fountain, the city’s emblem. The Santa Cristina Chapel is also nearby, as is the Santa Maria del Canneto, which is a unique church with a nave and two side aisles. The ancient Aragonese castle sits brooding above the modern city, and the Saint Francesco medieval church abuts the city’s ancient walls.
Your tour will also take you to the Tafuri Palace, built in the 18th century and featuring rococo designs. The Church of Purity and Saint Francesco D’Assisi Church are both nearby as well. The Church of the Souls, the Church of Santa Maria of Angels and the Church of the Crucifix are also well worth visiting.
Ravenna Palace is on your tour itinerary, as is the Church of Carmine and the Palazzo del Seminario. After wrapping up the sightseeing portion of the tour, you’ll have free time to enjoy the city, eat, shop or simply rest and relax before you make the return trip to your ship.
Remember that if you intend to enter any of the many stunning churches in Gallipoli, you must keep your shoulders and knees covered at all times. We also highly recommend that you wear comfortable shoes during your tour, and bring sunscreen and a hat with you.
