This is a full day tour, and it offers you a look at both ancient heritage and culture, and some of the most beautiful natural wonders that the country can offer.
Your full day tour begins with your departure from the port at Ortranto. You’ll have a full 8 hours of enjoyment as you head first to the city of Bari. The town has ancient origins – there has been a settlement in this spot since the Bronze Age. While in Bari, your tour guide will take you to several key locations, including the Norman castle – Castel del Monte. The castle has a unique architectural design, with octagonal shaped towers, rooms and even an octagonal courtyard.
Beyond the castle, you’ll visit the Cathedral of St. Nicholas and several other areas of town. Throughout Bari, you’ll enjoy Romanesque architecture combined with Byzantine elements.
After touring the city of Bari, it’s time to move on to the Caves of Castellana, just outside the town of the same name. The caves have been known and used for centuries, but mostly for storage by farmers. They were not fully explored until 1938. You will get to explore several of the chambers here during a guided tour, and you will love the sight of the stalagmites and stalactites covered in calcite crystals.
The actual cave visit takes about an hour, and then you will board your transport for the return trip to Otranto and your ship.
As a note, this tour is not recommended for anyone with claustrophobia or limited physical mobility. The underground areas can be slippery, so shoes with good grip are recommended. If you intend to enter any of the churches in Bari, you will need to keep your shoulders and knees covered at all times. No church allows photography with a flash.
Tour Operates rain or shine with a minimum of 2 Participants. Excursion is not recommended to guests with Claustrophobic or mobilty problems. The guided underground itinerary in the Caves takes place on a slipery and uneven trail. Due to traffic conditions the itinerary is subject to vary. Visit to the sites programmed are guaranteed. On Sundays Shops and Churches are closed.
