Starting at Trajan’s Column, created by Apollodorus of Damascus as an architectural marvel, our guide will take you along the Via dei Fori Imperiali, or street of the Imperial Forums. The Forum of Trajan will be on display, a commercial center where anything and everything could be purchased, as you continue on to Capitoline Hill, the once and current seat of political and municipal power. Following down a staircase, you’ll find yourself in the Piazza del Campidoglio, with a copy of the equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius, famous around the world. There is also a magnificent view of the Roman Forum and Palatine hill, next on our tour. You will re-live the history of Imperial Rome, as you walk through the Roman Forum. You will be transported back in time as you view the Curia, the State Archive, the Temple of Vesta and the House of the Vestals, virgins in charge of keeping sacred fires burning. The stories of gods and men are kept alive in the columns, arches and temples. Within the Forum is the Palatine, mythical founding place of Rome, by Romulus in 753 BC, and home of the emperors, starting with Augustus. Domus Tiberiana and the ruins of Imperial Palaces are also on view. You’ll pass under the Arch of Constantine as you leave the Forum, commemorating the victories of the emperor and the Colosseum, symbol of the imperial power and majesty of Rome.
