Come see what's under the Tuscan sun in this all day tour of two Italian gems! We'll pick you up from your hotel and drive through the vineyards and olive groves of the Val di Chiana region, until we reach Cortona, an ancient hill-town and the famous setting of the Frances Mayes' books Under the Tuscan Sun and Bella Tuscany. Besides its mythological origins, as home to Ulysses after his return from Ithaca, this fascinating town has and is full of history starting from the ancient Etruscan origins and including the battle of Lake Trasimeno, where Hannibal ambushed the Roman army during the Second Punic war and its importance as Medieval Commune. You'll traverse the winding hilly streets on foot, so be sure to wear your comfortable shoes the reach the town center, and visit the Duomo, the Church of San Domenico and the other beautiful historical palaces.
The tour continues onto Montepulciano, in the Orcia valley, on one of Tuscany's highest hills. The town itself is draped along a tufa, or volcanic stone, ridge, providing a natural defense against nature and attack. Our first stop will be the Church of San Biagio, on the outskirts of town, a honey colored Renaissance church, known for its beauty. Afterwards, lunch will be on your own, and the explorations will continue to the center of this fascinating walled town. We'll walk down the Via Poliziano, and visit the Palazzo del Comune, the Communal Palace, and its square became lately very famous as set of the movie “New Moon” from the fiction Twilight’s saga. A visit to Montepulciano, well known for its vino nobile, wouldn't be complete without a wine tasting, and you'll enjoy one in a cellar located in the tufa caves beneath the city. You may even enjoy a piece of Pecorino cheese, a regional specialty from the nearby town of Pienza. After the tasting, we will leave Montepulciano, saying goodbye to its beauty, and start the drive back to Florence.
