TOUR HIGHLIGHTS: Naples, Pompeii, Sorrento, Capri, Rome

TRAVEL ITINERARY:

Day 1: ROME – NAPLES – POMPEII – SORRENTO
Arrive at your designated meeting point in central Rome at 7:30 a.m., or depending on your hotel’s location, prepare for pick up between 6:45 and 7:15 in the morning. Leave Rome for Naples via coach with your English-speaking or multilingual tour leader. Once you are in Naples, a local guide will show you around this Bronze Age city filled with astounding history. During your exploration of Naples, you will see the central district, starting with the wide-open neoclassical Piazza del Plebiscito. The magnificent Gallery of Umberto I, with its 184’ tall arching dome of glass, will also be explored. The regal grandeur of the San Carlo Opera House and the architectural beauty of the Royal Palace will also be seen. Naples city center is the largest in Europe and is one of the richest in history. It spans back 27 centuries, though the Enlightenment and Renaissance eras have had the greatest impact on Naples. It was an extremely important city during these periods of history, which is why the city is filled with beautiful works of art and stately architecture. Also, Naples is where pizza was invented, and chefs in the area are still perfecting the dish to this day.
After your stop in Naples, you will head to Pompeii where you will experience a brief visit at a coral and cameo factory. Sit down for lunch in a quaint restaurant to experience the areas cuisine. After lunch you will be able to examine the excavations of the Roman Township. Pompeii is the town of legend wiped out by Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D., a volcano that smothered Pompeii in several meters of ash and stone. The town and its inhabitants were well preserved following the disaster, giving the entire area a haunting, eerie feel.
After your stop in Pompeii, you will continue to Sorrento, a small, picturesque town located near the beautiful Sorrentine Peninsula. Sorrento is right off the Bay of Naples, allowing a picturesque view for visitors. It is also well known for its orange, lemon and olive tree groves, which impart a pleasant aroma throughout the area. Once in Sorrento, sit down for a pleasant dinner at the hotel before turning in for the night.

Day 2: SORRENTO – CAPRI – ROME
Begin the day with a buffet breakfast before leaving around 9:15 a.m. for Capri. To reach the island of Capri, you will ride the ferry across the bay before pulling into Marina Grande. Capri has been a popular resort since the apex of the Roman Empire, attracting the wealthy and powerful from around the world. The island holds many natural beauties that you will see, including the pristine Blue Grotto, if the weather permits. The Blue Grotto is a sea cave that permits just enough sunlight to bathe the entire interior in a soothing blue glow. The Gardens of Augustus will offer breathtaking panoramic views of turquoise water and the Faraglioni rocks. The Piazzetta, Capri’s main square, offers beautiful views beyond the majestic clock tower.
For lunch, you will travel to Anacapri via minibus. Following lunch, return to Marina Grande where you will ride the ferry back to Sorrento, before departing for Rome. You should be back in the Italian capital, Rome approx. around 9:00 p.m. Hotel accommodations and dinner is not included for this evening.

Please note: For your own comfort, we suggest you do not bring heavy or bulky luggage, as you'll have to carry it around with you from the port in Sorrento to the luggage storage in Capri, and vice versa.
