Detailed itinerary:
Depart from Sorrento to reach the medieval city of Salerno. In the past the Monastery of the Benedictine Monks who founded its medical school offered the best education available at that time. In more modern times Salerno is best renowned for the allied troops landing on its beaches during the Second World War. Free time to enjoy the city where you can visit the Cathedral, stroll along the promenade or explore the historical centre. Or you may prefer some shopping in the pedestrian area, the choice is yours. After your free time in Salerno, the tour continues towards East to reach the town of Paestum, founded by the Greeks and named after Poseidon, the god of the sea to whom it was dedicated. During that Ancient Greek time, the Basilica, the Temple of Poseidon and the Temple of Ceres were built and they are considered nowadays to be the finest examples of their kind and better preserved than the Acropolis in Athens. Enjoy a very informative guided tour of this beautiful archaeological site and time permitting, visit the nearby museum that contains sculptures and artefacts found on the site. Return via motorway to Sorrento in the late afternoon.
