Walking along the Reggio Calabria streets you can find all the traditional handicraft of the region, from pottery to fabrics, woodwork to jewelers to wrought iron. A particular item of Reggio Calabria is the smoking pipe, still made by a few specialized craftsmen.

Tradition and events

Like the entire region, in Reggio Calabria and its vicinity there are a lot of traditional festivals. In September there is the festival of the Madonna della Consolazione, in which an effigy of the Virgin that is carried shoulder-high in a procession through the streets of the town. Another remarkable festival is the Festa della Madonna dell’Alto Mare in Palmi, close to Reggio Calabria: a procession of boats carries a statue of the Virgin, leading her to the beach of Tonnara, while the town is lit up with fireworks and lights.
