Handicraft

L’Aquila’s main square has had ever since 1304 when Charles of Anjou granted the town the right to hold one here: you’ll find produce and handicrafts on sale daily from dawn to 1pm.

WABR77.jpgThe L’Aquila embroiderers are famous for their laces. Tradition has it that Queen Mary Antoinette commissioned the women to make a series of laces as a gift for Pope Pius VII. Besides the traditional handicraft of Abruzzo region, in L’Aquila district you can find the ancient craft of umbrella-making in Secinaro village and the craft of basketry in San Vincenzo Valle Roveto.

For a visit out of the city: in the north of L’Aquila are the ruins of a theatre and amphitheatre of ancient Amiternum, first a Sabine then Roman town, and the birth place of Sallust (86–c.35 BC), the Roman historian and politician who helped to develop the monograph.

Tradition and Events

Of unforgettable charm and real historical importance is the Perdonanza Celestiana (the Celestian Pardoning) in L’Aquila at the end of August. It’s the only jubilee celebration outside Rome, during which, in the XIII century, Pope Celestino V, the Pope of the “Great Refusal” in Dante’s Divine Comedy, granted pardon to the poor and the helpless, who had no other means of obtaining indulgence.
