Vercelli was once a Roman town and previously known as Vercellae, it
was a city of a Ligurian tribe and became an important Municipum. It then became
a possession of the Duchy of Ivrea and then came under the jurisdiction of the
bishop who was a count of the empire and finally ceded to the House of Savoy in
1427.
