Founded by the Etruscans in the 4th century BC., Arezzo has high status as a military station during the Roman period, until the early Middle Ages when it began to decay. It was by the power of the Bishops’ that the town recovered and as a free medieval commune in 1098, remained a prosperous and independent republic. It was defeated by Firenze in 1298 at the battle of Campaldino and later, in the 14th century, came under the control of the Medicean Signoria. With the unity of Italy, Arezzo flourished again.
