Food (Cibo)

Along the Costiera Amalfitana, the sea reigns. It’s a paradise for seafood—grilled, fried, or prepared in zuppa di pesce (fish stew). Around the mussel-bound coast, you can enjoy zuppa di cozze (mussel soup) or mussels in various pasta dishes, such as pasta con cozze e vongole (pasta with mussels and small clams).

Sorrento has a number of excellent pizzerias, trattorias, and restaurants, with an emphasis on Southern Italian cuisine. Local specialties include seafood, almond cakes, smoked cheeses, and limoncello, a sweet-sour liqueur fermented from the lemons that grow in the area.

Wine (Vino)

Two villages on the north sides of the Sorrento Peninsula (Penisola Sorrentina), Lettere and Gragnanco, produce dry red wines; Sorrento produces red and white wines. Both Lettere and Gragnano were known for their fizzy red wines, but have lost many of their vineyards due to Naples (Napoli)’s expansion. Penisola Sorretina Bianco is made mainly from Falanghina, Biancolella, and/or Greco.
