Culture Of The Region Veneto Of Italy

Comparatively little survives to remind us that northern Italy was one of the most affluent and sophisticated areas of the Roman Empire. A few of the largest structure have endured as symbols of imperial grandeur. The arena at Verona is one of the largest ever to have been built and is still in use, although gladiatorial contests have been replaced by colorful opera performances by Verdi and Pucci. To be able to see an opera at the arena of Verona is every opera lover’s dream.

Venice (Venezia) is an incredible synthesis of art and history, an undisputed treasure of the culture of Veneto and of its artistic heritage. Venice (Venezia) was once the cradle of classical music and the birthplace of opera. Venice (Venezia) built the world’s first opera house and inspired composers as great as Bach, Handel, Wagner, and Britten. Opera may have emerged in 14th-century Florence, but was perfected by Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643) in Mantua and Venice (Venezia).

WVENVR10.jpgWealth from agriculture, commerce, and the spoils of war paid for the beautification of the cities of Veneto through the building of Renaissance palaces and public buildings, many designed by the Veneto’s great architect, Andrea Palladio. No other architect in the Western World’s history of art has ever had such an enormous influence as Andrea Palladio. Born in 1508 in Padova, Palladio moved to the nearby town of Vicenza when he was thirteen. In Vicenza he became an assistant in the leading workshop of stonecutters and masons.

WVENVR02.jpgBy 1538 Palladio and his workshop had begun construction of Villa Godi, the first of a series of country villas and urban palaces designed by Palladio for patrons among the provincial nobility of Vicenza, and later for the nobility of Venice (Venezia). His palazzo and villas are telling symbols of the leisured existence once enjoyed by the area’s aristocrats.

His Venetian works culminated in three magnificent churches: S. Giorgio Maggiore, Il Redentore, and Le Zitelle.

Today, Veneto is a thriving wine exporter, textile producer, agricultural center, and is a popular tourist destination.
