Culture Of The Region Liguria Of Italy

Isolated by mountains from the rest of Italy, a history of struggle against invaders and determination to survive made Liguria by default develop its own distinct cultural identity and character.  Patient and industrious, the people of Liguria are also tough, feisty, shrewd, adventurous and independent in spirit.

Local folklore lives throughout the year in the many events reflecting the history and culture deeply rooted in the souls of the people. Religious festivities and maritime customs preserve the spirit of this hilly and mountainous region by the sea.  Fine pottery, a highly skilled art passed from generation to generation, is still made in Albisola where factory artisans carry on the tradition that dates back to the 15th century.

Monterosso, Liguria ItalyEvery other year the procession in Savona exhibits the precious wooden “caskets”, sculpted 17th-18th century compositions, there are springtime celebrations with floral tributes (flowers are a major export) and village festivals nearly every day in the summer.  Liguria’s one hundred and seventy museums house glorious collections, and priceless treasures; a small museum is devoted to filigree jewelry that was imported from Byzantium and Europe’s most important museum of oriental art is in Genoa – a reminder of flourishing trade days.

Each event, every museum, each celebration is in some way a walk back in time to the rich history of the region and the resolute spirit of these people by the sea.
