Culture of Campobasso Molise Italy - Travel guide & Information Photo Gallery Campobasso

This description page of Campobasso, in the Italian region of Molise, will guide you in planning your trip to Italy and help you find useful travel information about the culture of this Italian city.

The Monforte Castle, with its six towers, is located on the top of S'Antonio Mountain and dates back to the 13th century.  In front of the Monforte Castle is the Church of Santa Maria del Monte (11th century). The frescoes inside are by the local painter Amedeo Trivisonno and the high bell tower was added in 1970.

WMOL16.JPGBeside The Cathedral (14th century) dedicated to Santa Maria Maggiore, built by Andrea di Capua in 1504, destroyed by the earthquake of 1805, and rebuilt between 1815 and 1829; there are many ancient churches. The Church of San Giorgio (10th century), lost its original façade due to the earthquakes and following reconstruction. There are also the Church of San Bartolomeo (11th century), the Church of San Leonardo, dating back to the 13th century, but modified during the 14th century and restored after the earthquake of 1456, and the Church of S. Maria della Croce (15th century) destroyed by earthquakes and rebuilt in 1930. The dome, unique in Campobasso, is probably the most beautiful in the whole region of Molise.  Last there is the Church of S'Antonio Abate which was built in 1572. It became the richest in the city. In the facade there is a late-Renaissance portal that dates back to 1572.

In Campobasso there is the Museum of Samnite Antiquities, interesting for the archeological heritage.

Close to Campobasso there are many nice villages and landscape, such as Ferrazzano, with its castle and belvedere, and the ancient Baranello, the heir of the Samnite Vairanum. It has a little Civic Museum with many Samnite artifacts.
